I think it is a little surprising that Little Richard would sing a song that was popularized by Al Jolson, who, while being festooned in blackface, also sang the immortal lyrics "I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles, my Mammy." The use of this light-hearted tune perfectly fits the nonchalant way in which the abortion industry views its evil practices. One thing about doing controversial and topical material, you will get comments. Excellent rhymes. This would make a very chilling video. I hope someone takes up this parody. CML, "Baby Face" was sung by Little Richard in 1958. It has been used by close to 30 artists! Even Marie Osmond and The Muppets!!!

CML: Jolson was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a racist. As early as 1911, at the age of 25, Jolson was already noted for fighting discrimination on the Broadway stage and later in his movies. At a time when black people were banned from starring on the Broadway stage, he promoted the play by black playwright Garland Anderson, which became the first production with an all-black cast ever produced on Broadway. He brought an all-black dance team from San Francisco that he tried to feature in his Broadway show. He demanded equal treatment for Cab Calloway, with whom he performed a number of duets in his movie The Singing Kid. He was the only white man allowed into an all black nightclub in Harlem! African Americans perceived Jolson as a friend.

According to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture: "Almost single-handedly, Jolson helped to introduce African-American musical innovations like jazz, ragtime, and the blues to white audiences.... [and] paved the way for African-American performers like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Ethel Waters.... to bridge the cultural gap between black and white America."

Performing in blackface makeup was a theatrical convention of many entertainers at the beginning of the 20th century, having its origin in the minstrel show. Working behind a blackface mask gave Jolson a sense of freedom and spontaneity he had never known. According to film historian Eric Lott, for the white minstrel man "to put on the cultural forms of 'blackness' was to engage in a complex affair of manly mimicry.... To wear or even enjoy blackface was literally, for a time, to become black, to inherit the cool, virility, humility, abandon, or gaité de coeur that were the prime components of white ideologies of black manhood."

As metaphor of mutual suffering, Jazz historians have described Jolson's blackface and singing style as metaphors for Jewish and black suffering throughout history. Jolson's first film, The Jazz Singer, for instance, is described by historian Michael Alexander as an expression of the liturgical music of Jews with the "imagined music of African Americans," noting that "prayer and jazz become metaphors for Jews and blacks." Playwright Samson Raphaelson, after seeing Jolson perform his stage show Robinson Crusoe, stated that "he had an epiphany: 'My God, this isn't a jazz singer', he said. 'This is a cantor!'" The image of the blackfaced cantor remained in Raphaelson's mind when he conceived of the story which led to The Jazz Singer.

Finally, it should be recognized that Jolson was an American war hero who made the supreme sacrifice for his country. During WW2, he entertained the troops in the South Pacific with his usual enormous energy. He contracted malaria and had to have a lung removed. He enjoyed a late revival with two autobiographical movies and a radio show. In 1950, he went to Korea on an exhausting tour, breathing dust. Upon his return to the U.S., he died of a massive heart attack brought on by his exertions for his country.

Yes, I was aware that Jolson was very supportive of blacks in his career. I can read a Wikipedia entry as well as the next guy And as a Jewish immigrant whose family was driven out of their ancestral homeland by the anti Semitic policies of the Czar Alexander III, that would make complete sense .......... I knew enough about Jolson to access Wiki for the convenience of its off-the-shelf written exposition. Somebody had to do it, and Alan and I did. We are no fools; I know the weaknesses of Wiki. It simply jogged my memory of Jolson lore which I already knew; if there was material unfamiliar to me, I did not excerpt it. When used critically, Wikipedia is a valuable resource.
Of course, WIW, if there were a MIL-STD on Jolson, I would have referenced that. But Al was a missile of delight, not death and destruction.
